Rights of Students with Disabilities
- Students with disabilities have the right to participate in higher education if they are otherwise qualified to be admitted. All students, with or without the use of accommodations, must be able to meet entrance requirements.
- Once admitted, students with disabilities have the right to an equal access educational experience at Claremont McKenna College. The right of equal access applies to all of CMC’s programs, services, activities and facilities that are available to other students.
- Students with disabilities are eligible for reasonable accommodations related to their disability as determined by Accessible Services. Reasonable accommodations must not fundamentally alter an essential course/program requirements, and accommodations that would do so are considered unreasonable and would not be approved. All students are held to the same set of academic standards and are responsible for determining their own level of success.
- Students with disabilities have the right to confidentiality of all disability-related information including documentation, consultations, accommodations letters and other correspondences. Accessibility Services will not release any information pertaining to a student’s record without consent unless there is an extenuating circumstance that necessitates it. For more information regarding privacy rights please refer to CMC’s Student Records Policies and Procedures.
Responsibilities of Students with Disabilities
- Students with disabilities must self-identify and provide documentation regarding their disabilities. Information related to documentation guidelines may be found in the Documentation Guidelines section.
- Students must schedule a time to meet with Accessibility Services to discuss the impact of their disability and the reasonable accommodations they find necessary.
- Students who have been approved to receive accommodations must request for their accommodation letter to be sent to each instructor. Approved accommodations do not become effective until the notification letter has been shared. Accommodations are not retroactive, meaning accommodations will not be applicable to any coursework that took place prior to requesting the notification letter.
- It is the student’s responsibility to discuss with each faculty member how accommodations will be implemented in their course.
- It is the student’s responsibility to notify Accessibility Services in a timely manner of any concerns or obstacles they encounter regarding the implementation of their accommodations or if they are seeking any changes/additions to approved accommodations.

Who can apply for accommodations?
Individuals with a condition that rises to the level of a disability are entitled to reasonable accommodations. The Americans with Disabilities Act defines disability as “with respect to an individual: (A) a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual; (B) a record of such an impairment; or (C) being regarded as having such an impairment.” 42 U.S.C. § 12102(2). Disabilities may include, but are not limited to, learning differences or disabilities, physical and mobility impairments, sensory impairments, psychological disorders, and/or chronic health illnesses.
Please note, having received accommodations in high school does not automatically make you eligible for services in college. You must register for services and provide supporting documentation which includes a clear diagnosis and provides information related to functional limitations. If you are determined to be eligible, approved accommodations may be different from those received while in high school.
Must I apply for accommodations in my first semester at CMC?
No. Students may apply for accommodations at any point during their time at CMC. However, please keep in mind that the process takes time to complete and accommodations are not retroactive.
Do I have to use my accommodations every semester?
No. In order to access approved accommodations, the student will need to request their letter of accommodation at the beginning of each semester. The student will be able to select the course(s) and the particular accommodation(s) they anticipate needing.
For example:
Internships, physical education classes, or other non-lectures may be courses in which an approved notetaking accommodation may not be beneficial.
Will my accommodations appear on my transcript?
No. A student’s accommodation profile, including any supporting documentation, is considered confidential information and is kept separate from academic records. Accessibility Services will not release any information without prior written consent of the student. This includes other programs, post-graduate schools, or employers.
Can I get transportation assistance on campus?
CMC offers transportation services via golf cart for students with a mobility impairment. The rides are only available to and from classes and are subject to drivers’ ability. Please contact Erika Hongo at erika.hongo@cmc.edu for more information.
How can I request accommodations for events/activities?
