Research
Elections
Our study of voting and elections includes analysis of ballot measures, the redistricting process, the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA), and primary election systems.
Polling
The CMC-Rose Institute Poll has partnered with YouGov to conduct several national and comparative state-level surveys. Our polling program aims to inform public discourse, provide students first-hand experience in survey methodology, and support faculty research.
Governance and Policy
The Rose Institute has conducted numerous studies of state and local government institutions, with the goal of promoting good governance. The Institute also conducts policy analysis in select areas, most recently focusing on housing and criminal justice policy in California.
Inland Empire
The Rose Institute has long maintained a regional focus on Southern California’s Inland Empire, a fast growing region comprised of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties and home to more than 4.5 million residents. The Rose Institute and CMC’s Lowe Institute of Political Economy have partnered on various Inland Empire research projects and twice each year the Rose Institute publishes the Inland Empire Outlook, a student-authored publication that includes economic and policy relevant to the region.
California Competitiveness
California is a high-cost state and faces a challenge retaining residents and businesses. The Rose Institute has studied these costs in the interest of making California more competitive.
Federalism
The Rose Institute has published a series of reports on federalism analyzing how the nation’s federal system of government has affected policy formation in areas including health care, marijuana regulation, immigration, environmental protection, and public education.
DataHub
The Rose Institute has a team working on a major long-term project to collect, organize, and present data relevant to state and local government. At present, the project is called the Rose Institute DataHub. The DataHub is designed to provide a central, accessible, searchable, state and local data source that will allow users to explore trends, compare jurisdictions, and identify areas of concern.
Faculty Research
Rose Institute students have opportunities to work with CMC faculty as research assistants on scholarly publications, and occasionally serve as co-authors.
