Pitney suggested that on the economy, Democrats need to be careful in the framing. “If they say inflation is coming down, people will hear prices are coming down,” and that’s not happening, he said. “A decline in the rate of increase [in inflation] isn’t a great talking point.”

Today, it is existential,” he said, adding that China’s leaders “have elevated self-sufficiency to a level China has not seen since the end of the Mao era” in 1976.
