Building Relationships

After 40 years on campus, Prof. Nicholas Warner extols the CMC culture

When Prof. Nicholas Warner joined the CMC faculty in 1980, students didn’t have cell phones or laptops, and there were no social media platforms.

As Warner recently observed, while technology has transformed our lives over the past four decades, what’s remained the same is the College’s collegial sense of community.

The Open Academy

CMC’s strategy to promote expression, viewpoint diversity, and dialogue

Intellectual humility. Critical thinking. Active listening. Respectful debate. Solutions to complex problems built on common ground.

These are the bedrock principles of higher education—and they help inform the three Open Academy commitments that guide CMC’s strategy to help develop the next generation of emerging scholar-leaders.

Once in a Lifetime

CMC student movie about study abroad wins grand prize

Studying overseas not only transformed Kiubon Kokko ’21, it won him a grand prize.

Kokko, a senior majoring in media studies, spent the fall 2019 semester in Nantes, France, studying with the IES Abroad program and living with a host family.

“I chose to study in Nantes, because you can always visit somewhere popular, like Paris, later in life,” he said. “Someplace like Nantes is unique and presents a true once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

A Community That CAREs

CARE Center Director Vince Greer on how diversity and inclusion work starts with each of us

Vince Greer has been front and center in the foundational work of diversity and inclusion at CMC since his arrival as the first director of the CARE Center in July 2016. With George Floyd’s murder in May 2020 prompting social justice protests around the country, Greer reflected on his work as associate dean of students for diversity, inclusion, and residential life.

Claremont McKenna College’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship now bears Randall Lewis’s name in honor and recognition of the real estate industry leader. Lewis ’73 P’10 P’11 P’13 was celebrated for his loyal commitment to the College in October 2020.

“The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is the perfect home for Randall’s name,” said CMC trustee Jim McElwee ’74 P’12, Lewis’ classmate and longtime friend.

Advancing Inquiry and Debate

CMC wins Institutional Excellence Award from Heterodox Academy

Claremont McKenna College’s commitment to advancing open inquiry holds a long tradition. Professors of varying political persuasions co-teach courses, the Athenaeum showcases a variety of speaker viewpoints, and students are encouraged to use critical thinking skills across disciplines. CMC has continually been recognized for its Open Academy initiative, including winning the 2019 Institutional Excellence Award from Heterodox Academy (HxA).
