Two New Books Highlight Kravis Leadership Institute Research

Two new books compiling recent research from CMC's Kravis Leadership Institute examine a number of cutting-edge issues in leadership studies.

Improving Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations, edited by Ronald E. Riggio, Kravis Professor of Leadership and Organizational Psychology, and Kravis Leadership Institute director, and Sarah Smith Orr, KLI board member, is a comprehensive volume of the proceedings of the 12th annual Kravis de-Roulet Leadership Conference, held at CMC in February 2002.

The book examines motivation and compensation issues in theory, research and practice, with chapters from renowned leadership scholars including Bernard M. Bass, Stephen Mark Dobbs, Florence Green, Frances Hesselbein, and Jay Conger, who will join CMC in 2005 as the Kravis Professor of Leadership. The research presents strategies for motivating volunteers and includes strategies to increase leadership capacity, as well as a comparison of for-profit boards of directors with nonprofit boards. In addition, it offers a unique focus on personal leadership development. Improving Leadership in Nonprofit Organization is published by Jossey-Bass. The Future of Development compiles research and presentations from the 2001 Kravis-de Roulet Leadership Conference, exploring new requirements of leaders who must adapt their styles with the rapidly-changing work environment. Edited by Susan Murphy, associate professor of psychology and associate director of the institute, and Professor Riggio, the book includes a discussion of various techniques for developing leaders in organizations such as 360 degree assessments and action learning and outline the leadership development process for today's organizations. Also included are analyses of "e-leadership" and effective management within virtual organizations.

The Future of Leadership Development is published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. More information is available at: http://kli.claremontmckenna.edu/publications.htm.
