Susan L. Taylor Keynote Speaker for
The Claremont Colleges Annual
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration

The Claremont Colleges are pleased to host Susan L. Taylor, author and editor-in-chief emeritus, Essence magazine, as the keynote speaker for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Commemoration event. Taylor will speak at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum at 6:45 pm; all members of the community are invited to attend. Her speech is entitled "Achieving Your Dream: Bold, Visionary Leadership from the Inside Out."
Taylor was an integral part of Essence magazine for over thirty years, working her was up from freelance writer to editor-in-chief. During her tenure at Essence, she was instrumental in building the Essence brand, by developing Essence, the television program, and launching Essence Books.
While editor, Taylor wrote a monthly inspirational column "In the Spirit;" these essays were collected into a best-selling book, In the Spirit: The Inspirational Writings of Susan L. Taylor. She also authored Lessons in Living and Confirmation: The Spiritual Wisdom That Has Shaped Our Lives.
Since leaving Essence, Taylor has turned her attention to National CARES Mentoring Movement, a coalition group she founded which is focused on recruiting and connecting adult mentors with vulnerable children, through a network of youth-serving organizations.
