Students Volunteer at Local Health Fair

CMC students took a personal interest in the health of Inland Empire residents in Ontario on Oct. 11. More than 40 students volunteered approximately 100 hours at a local health and wellness fair, providing medical services to those who otherwise could not afford them.
"The outpouring of support and enthusiasm from the Claremont community was amazing," said Nirant Gupta '11, a student volunteer and CMC Community Service Coordinator. "With so much national discussion surrounding health care policy, it was nice to step back and provide actual heal care. As volunteers, we were able to help facilitate the process while letting West End and the doctors do their job and provide medical services."
As a volunteer coordinator, Gupta also noted, "There is always a concern that there will be too much work for too few hands. Thanks in part to Claremont's extraordinary group of volunteers, that wasn't an issue at the health fair. I'm glad we were able to help."
Organized by Reach Out West Enda nonprofit agency servicing the Inland Empire and Pomona Valleythe event attracted more than 4,000 people and provided approximately 500 participants with free medical, dental, and vision screenings. The majority of the attendees participated in information sessions on nutrition education and illness prevention.
The CMC Community Service Office is located in Heggblade Center and is responsible for planning and coordinating community service projects throughout the year. Students who are interested in volunteering and identifying service projects are encouraged to contact their dorm representative or meet with a community service coordinator.
