Sarah Awad '03 presented the findings of her senior thesis, A Statistical Analysis of Combined Deterministic and Random Changes, to the United States Navy Strategic Systems Program, June 2 in Washington, D.C.
Janet Myhre, Dengler-Dykema Professor of Mathematics and director of CMC's Reed Institute of Decision Science, accompanied Awad on the presentation and described the presentation as "first-rate. . . Sarah is one of the best students I've ever had, and I've had some good students. She'll do well in anything."
Awad's presentation focused on the hypothesis that certain sets of data may follow a more stochastic, or random, process over time. The original research leading to Awad's hypothesis started about two years ago in response to a problem communicated by the Navy to Professor Myhre. As a student assistant at the Reed Institute, Awad adopted the problem, built models, and derived original solutions that, according to Prof. Myhre, "solved the problem very elegantly." Awad eventually decided to construct her senior thesis as a continuation of this research.
Awad, a mathematics and studio art major, graduated summa cum laude, and plans to pursue art studies at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design.
