The Henry Salvatori Center for the Study of Individual Freedom in the Modern World will host a conference on The Future of America's Political Parties at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 7. The event will feature an array of distinguished experts who will address the challenges and anticipated directions of both the Democratic and Republican platforms in America.
As the 2006 midterm elections approach, both parties are in pursuit of the political strategy that will bring electoral victories from state legislatures to Congress. Republicans face declining presidential popularity, charges of congressional corruption, and loss of purpose, while Democrats struggle to formulate a positive message and to overcome voter distrust on national security and cultural issues.
A partial list of panel discussion participants includes Michael Barone, senior editor, U.S. News & World Report; Peter Beinart, editor, The New Republic; Patrick Caddell, a well-known pollster and top Democratic consultant and strategist, as well as creative consultant for television's West Wing; Hugh Hewitt, nationally syndicated radio host who will be broadcasting live from CMC from 3:30 to 6 p.m.; Elaine Kamarck, professor, Harvard University, expert on Democratic politics; William Kristol, editor, The Weekly Standard; John J. Pitney, CMC professor and nationally recognized commentator.
As an extension of Friday's lineup, Timothy Roemer, (former Congressman, D-Ind.) will speak at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum at lunch. Roemer, who played a key role in the formation of the 9/11 National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, is president of the Center for National Policy.
The Henry Salvatori Center for the Study of Individual Freedom in the Modern World is Claremont McKenna College's oldest research institute. It examines questions of political philosophy as they bear on the life of contemporary America.
