The 2013-14 academic year officially kicked off with Opening Convocation on September 3. Highlighting the event was President Hiram E. Chodosh’s keynote address, “No Constraints.” The talk focused on internal constraints that keep us from realizing our full potential, including: “false ideas about our own limitations,” “narrow concepts of identity that are excessively exclusive in nature,” and “fear of failure.” Chodosh recounted his personal experiences throughout the speech, and reassured students he would support them in their own risk-taking endeavors. Convocation also included recognition of years of service for College faculty and staff; faculty teaching and merit awards; a cheerful rendition of the Claremont McKenna song, led by Professor Ward Elliott; and final reflections by Associated Students president Gavin Landgraf ’14.
