Newsweek Editor and CNN Host Fareed Zakaria On Campus Oct. 27

Editor of Newsweek International, columnist, and CNN host Fareed Zakaria will visit the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Tuesday, Oct. 27 to discuss, "The Rise of the Rest: The Post-American World." A dinner preceding Zakaria's address is restricted to the CMC community; members of the Claremont McKenna community also will have priority seating for the lecture inside the Athenaeum, which begins at 6:45 p.m. Seating for the public is free on a first-come basis, with overflow seating also available in McKenna Auditorium.

One of the most familiar commentators on international affairs, Zakaria has been described by Esquire magazine as "the most influential foreign policy adviser of his generation," and is widely respected for his ability to spot economic and political trends around the world. Zakaria oversees all of Newsweek's editions abroad, and his cover stories and column son subjects from globalization and emerging markets to the Middle East and America's role in the world reach more than 25 million readers weekly. He is also the host of Fareed Zakaria GPS, a weekly international news program on CNN worldwide.

His national bestseller, The Post-American World, is about the "rise of the rest"the growth of China, India, Brazil and many other countries and what it means for the future. His previous bestseller, The Future of Freedom, has been translated into 20 languages and was called "a work of tremendous originality and insight" by The Washington Post.

Born in India, Zakaria studied at Yale before receiving his Ph.D. at Harvard, where his dissertation adviser was Professor Samuel Huntington. After achieving his doctorate, he became managing editor of Foreign Affairs, where he was charged with reinvigorating the popular journal. In 2000, he transitioned to Newsweek, where he writes a regular column on foreign affairs. His cover article "Why They Hate Us," written after the September 11 terrorist attacks, launched Zakaria into the national limelight and garnered him several awards.

Zakaria is a former news analyst with ABC's political talk show This Week with George Stephanopoulos, and former host of a weekly program on PBS. His weekly show on CNN, Fareed Zakaria GPS, brings in-depth interviews with world leaders and panel discussions with international analysts.

In 2007, Zakaria was named one of the 100 leading public intellectuals in the world by both Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines. He has received honorary degrees from numerous universities and serves on the boards of Yale University, The Council on Foreign Relations, The Trilateral Commission, and Shakespeare and Company.
