Last night's "Evening with Michael Eisner" proved to be both entertaining and insightful. While the dinner was completely booked, a few dozen CMC students, alumni, faculty, and staff joined the group for Eisner's talk. Rather than delivering a prepared speech, Mr. Eisner engaged in a discussion with Drucker Business Forum Producer Ted Habte-Gabr. Early in the discussion, Eisner shared the story of his start at Disney and how he became one of the most recognizable CEOs of all time. He then turned to his book Working Together: Why Great Partnerships Succeed, and explored some of the partnerships included there, elaborating on the incredibly successful dynamic of his own partnership with Frank Wells. He offered serious thoughts on the importance of partnership peppered with surprisingly funny remarks.
Several students asked questions after the formal discussion and got honest and humorous answers. When asked if he had gotten it wrong in refusing to purchase Pixar, Eisner responded politely and defended his belief that the move was too risky, answering with more of the humor the audience had witnessed throughout the evening.
Further questions allowed listeners to gain insight into his relationship with Roy Disney, his love for the content in the entertainment business and the importance of summer camp in his understanding of teamwork.
The evening was enjoyable for all. Thanks to a varied discussion and quick wit, Michael Eisner proved an excellent guest of the Athenaeum. And this is just the beginning of the speaker season! --Katherine Wernet '11
