Mark Segal '86 P'15 received the Human Rights Medallion from the American Jewish Committee (AJC) in a Nov. 25 ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago. The event was hosted by Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to President Barack Obama.
The honor is among the top awards of the more than 100-years-old AJC, an international advocacy group whose stated mission is to enhance the well-being of Israel and the Jewish people worldwide, and to advance human rights and democratic values in the United States and around the world.
Since 1963, the Human Rights Medallion has been awarded by the Chicago Regional Office of the AJC to leading Chicago citizens who have stood for the goals that have shaped the organization.
Mark Segal is the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Habitat Company and its affiliates.
The Habitat Company is a full-service multi-family real estate company that has developed more than 17,000 rental and condominium units and currently manages over $2.0 billion of assets comprised of approximately 20,000 residential units in five states. Prior to joining The Habitat Company in 2002, Mark was an attorney in private practice.
Mark serves on the Board of Directors of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and its Executive Committee and is the Chair of its Public Policy Committee. Mark recently served on the Steering Committee for the City of Chicago Five Year Housing Plan. Mark is a member of the Boards of Directors of Business and Professional People for the Public Interest and of the Greater Chicago/Upper Midwest Region of the Anti-Defamation League.
Mark also serves on the Advisory Board of the Center for Human Rights Leadership at Claremont McKenna College and is co-chair of the Center’s Strategic Planning Committee. Mark is a member of the Steering Committee of the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition and is a past President of Chicago Sinai Congregation.
Mark received his juris doctor degree from Northwestern University School of Law and his master of management degree from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Mark holds a bachelor’s degree from Claremont McKenna College.
