Leszek Balcerowicz, Leader in Polish Economic
Reform, to Speak at Athenaeum

On Oct. 14, the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum is proud to welcome Polish economist Leszek Balcerowicz to speak on "How to Avoid Another Financial Crisis."
Balcerowicz is the former Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and the father of Poland's transition to a market economy. He also served as the President of the National Bank of Poland and the president of the Polish political party, Freedom Union (UW). In these roles, Balcerowicz was instrumental in the successful transformation of the Polish economy.
After graduating from the Central School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw (now the Warsaw School of Economics), Balcerowicz earned his MBA from St. Johns University in New York, and his Ph.D. from the Warsaw School of Economics, where he currently serves on the faculty.
In 2005, the President of Poland awarded Balcerowicz with the country's highest honor, the Order of the White Eagle, for his contributions to Polish economic reform.
The economist is also the co-editor of Living Standards and Wealth of Nations: Successes and Failures in Real Convergence (2006) and Barriers to Entry and Growth of New Firms in Early Transition: A Comparative Study of Poland, Hungry, Czech Republic, Albania, and Lithuania (2002).
Balcerowicz's lecture at the Athenaeum is sponsored by the Family of Benjamin Z. Gould Center for Humanistic Studies at CMC, in collaboration with the European Union Center at Scripps College.
