Landing that all-important first job out of college is a rite of passage anticipated by graduates. But as the current economic recession deepens and hiring freezes and layoffs increase, graduates are challenged to find work in the toughest job market in decades.
Knowing this is an issue on the minds of many parents, CMC's Parent Network will host an event in Seattle, Wash., on Thursday, April 30 at the home of Polly and Robert Amkraut P'10. Called CMC and Beyond, the discussion features Diana Seder, interim director of the Career Services Center at CMC, who plans to outline ways parents can prepare their children for work after college.
Diana will describe the role Career Services plays in students' liveswhile they are on campus and even after they've graduated.
As the parent of a college freshman, Seder knows what questions she would ask if attending the event as a participant.
"I'd ask how my child should approach this challenging employment market and how I, as a parent, should help them," she says. Also, What should my student be doing during summer vacation to prepare for the turnaround?"
Attendees will learn Seder's five tips for how students should spend the summer preparing to face the new economy. Her remarks also emphasize the timely services offered by the Career Services Center, including the on-campus recruiting and counseling programs that focus on the individual student. In addition, Seder will provide an overview of the Center's workshop, seminar, and special events series, as well as recent technological strides the Center has made to better address student needs.
Jan Soderstrom P '09 says the sluggish economy has had an enormous impact on the future plans of her son Matt Moone '09, an economics and psychology dual major currently interviewing for jobs. He's also studying for LSAT exams in the fall, with an eye toward enrolling in law school.
"Fewer meaningful jobs and the uncertain economic outlook definitely contributed to his decision to apply to law school," Soderstrom said.
Despite the challenges ahead, she says CMC has prepared her son for a successful career, and that he plans to continue working with the Career Services Center after graduating in May.
The April 30 event begins with a beverages and hors d'oeuvres reception at 6 p.m., followed at 6:30 by the presentation and discussion.
Seder earned her MBA from Claremont Graduate School, where she later served as acting director of Career Services. She joined the CMC Career Services Center in 1997, and has worked as an associate director of recruiting and associate director of internships.
