Dewey Redman To Perform March 3

Musician Dewey Redman, hailed by Downbeat magazine as "the greatest living tenor saxophonist," will perform at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 3 in the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. The event is free and open to the public.

Redman, who studied clarinet at 13 before switching to sax for his high school marching band, earned a master's degree and taught in public schools in San Francisco before launching his professional music career. A longtime friendship with Ornette Coleman developed into a close musical association. Redman toured with Coleman's avant garde quartet in the '70s, and it was during that time that Redman recorded Tarik (1969).

Redman, whose music is featured on recordings by Elvin Jones, Keith Jarrett, and Pat Metheny, will be accompanied by modern trumpet master Tim Hagans.
