Dan Savage Speaks Out

As a part of the Athenaeum's ongoing series, "Shifting Perceptions: Celebrating the Spectrum of Leadership," Dan Savage spoke to the CMC community about the It Gets Better Project. The talk fit snugly into the theme of the speaker series, which aims to foster a greater sense of inclusivity and community at CMC by celebrating the bold leadership of women, gay men, and lesbians.
While most of his talk was about the project and its mission of talking to at-risk LBGT youth directly through video, it was during the Q&A session with students and other guests that Savage delved more colorfully into his column's territory: the socio-political context of sex. As student interest and questions intensified, so did his exuberance for unfettered anatomical language.
Kendyl Klein '13 was there to witness the flare first hand. "Dan Savage, f-bombs and all, riled up the crowd in the most inspiring way possible," she said. "As a man who takes his values and beliefs to the extremes, he reminded all of us, not only the LGBT kids, that life does get better that life is more than what happens in high school and college."
Savage is a regular contributor to This American Life, a frequent commentator on national op-ed pages, and the author of four books. In spring 2011, he edited the collection It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living.
