Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will host the San Gabriel Valley Regional Special Olympic Games this Sunday, Oct. 7, beginning at 9 a.m. (Spectators are invited to attend.)
Coaches, athletes, and unified partners will participate in an Olympic-style event featuring competition in volleyball and soccer, along with an opening and closing ceremony and awards. Student volunteers from CMC, Harvey Mudd and Scripps colleges the majority of whom are student-athletes will help to run the all-day event in conjunction with several members of the CMS athletics department and community volunteers.
The Games open at 9 a.m. with a ceremony on Pritzlaff Field; competition runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Awards and a closing ceremony will conclude the afternoon.
Five soccer games will be underway, simultaneously, on Parent's and Pritzlaff fields, directed by CMS women's soccer coach Keri Sanchez. Additionally, four volleyball courts will be used at Ducey Gymnasium, under the direction of CMS volleyball coach Dianna Graves.
CMS football coach Rick Candaele and CMS men's tennis coach Paul Settles, with volunteers from their teams, will be on-hand for event support services including setup, takedown, and troubleshooting.
