Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman advised members of the graduating Class of 2005 to "stay informed, stay engaged, and always exercise the right to vote.
"Our system of government depends on the broadest participation of its people, " Whitman reminded the several thousand guests gathered in Badgley Garden for the College's 58th annual commencement ceremonies on May 15. Amid spikes in voter turnout for the 2004 Presidential race and worldwide interest in California's 2003 recall election, "We are still a long way from declaring victory when it comes to American voter participation," Whitman observed.
Tailoring her remarks to a campus ranked first, nationally, by Princeton Review as Most Politically Active, Whitman opted for talking politics over ceremonial prudence, explaining, "I've found that in my personal experiences, the moments of greatest wisdom come from going through life."
Sunday's Commencement events included the Latin Salutation Fvror Discendi, presented by graduates Colin Hunter and Cary Sabados; Class Presentation by senior class president Jacquelyn Dadakis; awarding of honorary degrees to Life Trustee Donald Freeberg, and Christine Todd Whitman; presentation of diplomas by Trustee Robert Nakasone '69; the Class Charge by President Pamela Gann; a benediction by Robert Craig Bond '05; and a recessional by the Artisan Brass Quintet. A reception honoring graduates and guests followed on Parents Field.
