Claremont McKenna College Panel To DiscussThe Catholic Church And The Holocaust

Claremont McKenna College's Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum will host a panel discussion on “The Vatican, Daniel Goldhagen, and the Holocaust” at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18. The lecture is free and open to the public; seating is available on a first-come basis. The Athenaeum is located at 385 East Eighth Street, at the intersection of Eighth and Amherst Streets in Claremont.

Holocaust scholar Daniel Goldhagen will be joined by three panelists to discuss Goldhagen's work regarding the role of the Catholic Church in the Holocaust. Dr. Goldhagen holds a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University, and taught at Harvard for several years. He is the author of A Moral Reckoning: The Role of the Catholic Church in the Holocaust and Its Unfulfilled Duty of Repair and Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust.

The panelists will be John Roth, Michael Berenbaum, and Eva Fleischner. John Roth is the Russell K. Pitzer Professor of Philosophy at Claremont McKenna College, where he chairs the department of philosophy and religious studies. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including Pope Pius XII and the Holocaust. Eva Fleischner, a noted Catholic theologian, is professor emerita at Montclair State University. The author of several Holocaust-related books, she has served on the advisory board of the United States Catholic Bishops' Office on Catholic-Jewish Relations, and the International Catholic-Jewish Historical Commission. Michael Berenbaum is the author of numerous books and articles, and the director of the Sigi Ziering Center for the Study of the Holocaust and Ethics at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles. Dr. Berenbaum is this year's William F. Podlich Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Claremont McKenna College.
