Assemblyman Chuck Devore '85
Talks with Students About
His 2010 Senate Bid

California State Assemblyman Chuck Devore (Rep. 70th District), a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2010, visited Claremont on Saturday, April 18, at the invitation of the Claremont College Republicans. A 1985 graduate of Claremont McKenna College, Devore talked with students and other guests attending a dinner that evening about his experiences at CMC, his Senate candidacy, and his innovative use of technology in his campaign.
DeVore was the subject of a recent front-page Wall Street Journal story about Republicans wanting to close the so-called "technology gap" with Democrats. He is actively using Twitter and Facebook to build support for his campaign for U.S. Senate in 2010, when he hopes to challenge incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer.
Claremont College Republicans President Mike Whatley '11 says the club will stay in contact with Devore throughout his Senate race, and "do whatever we can to help his campaignmuch like we did with CMC alumnus Congressman David Dreier '75 during his 2008 reelection campaign."
Assemblyman DeVore represents California's 70th Assembly District, an area that includes about 450,000 people in the Orange County communities of Aliso Viejo, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Newport Beach, and Tustin. His legislative committee assignments are: Vice Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation, Veterans Affairs, and, Budget. He also serves as a Republican Whip. He was elected in 2004 and reelected in 2006.
Devore has been named the Legislator of the Year by five organizations: the California Veterans of Foreign Wars, the California State Commanders Veterans Council, an umbrella organization of 19 veterans groups, the Young Republican Federation of California, the California College Republicans, and the Republican Party of Orange County. In 2006, United Way of Orange County honored him for his legislation to improve childcare.
Claremont College Republicans is a 5-C club with more than 130 members and students representing The Claremont Colleges. The club promotes Republican ideas and goals by hosting on-campus meetings, Republican speakers, and attending local off-campus Republican events as well as supporting local Republican candidates.
The club, Whatley says, also encourages more political debate in general, on campus, by hosting bipartisan events and debates with the Democratic club on campus.
