Annual Henry R. Kravis Prize to Honor Nonprofit Leadership

Claremont McKenna College and the Kravis Leadership Institute announce the establishment of the Henry R. Kravis Prize in Leadership. The annual prize, to be inaugurated in 2006, will highlight and celebrate an exemplar of best practices in leadership in the not-for-profit sector, and carries a $250,000 award.
Founded and sponsored by CMC Trustee Henry R. Kravis, founding partner, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., the Kravis Prize recognizes an individual or organization demonstrating extraordinary achievement over time in the not-for-profit sector. Award criteria include boldness, innovation, creativity, consistency, persistence, effectiveness in bringing a vision to fruition, and outstanding accomplishment in realizing the mission of an organization.
The selection committee is chaired by Marie-Jos?e Kravis, Hudson Institute senior fellow. Committee members are: Harry McMahon, Kravis Leadership Institute Advisory Board chairman, CMC Trustee, and vice chairman, Merrill Lynch & Co.; Sudha Murty, president, Infosys Foundation; Lord Rothschild, chairman, Rothschild Investment Trust Capital Partners; and James D. Wolfensohn, president, The World Bank. The inaugural award will be presented in Los Angeles next year.
Led by Mr. Kravis, the organizing committee includes Peter Barker, chairman of the CMC Board of Trustees and advisory director, Goldman Sachs & Co.; Pamela Gann, CMC president; Mr. McMahon; and Scott Miller, president, Six Sigma Academy, Aspen, Colorado.
"The Kravis Prize provides a unique platform from which to celebrate and honor those visionary leaders whose commitment and overall excellence have charted groundbreaking new paths within the philanthropic arena," said CMC President Pamela Gann. "We are deeply honored to work with Henry and Marie-Jos?e Kravis in this important endeavor."
Nominations will be solicited from an international cadre of more than 100 confidential nominators selected each year on the basis of their breadth and depth of knowledge of the nonprofit sector; unsolicited nominations will not be considered.

The Institute plays an active role in the education of CMC students by involving them in professional leadership research and by offering an intense, interdisciplinary leadership curriculumcombining classroom study with hands-on leadership experience.
