Andrew Lee '07 Named to
All-USA College Academic Team

Andrew Lee '07 is among 20 students selected by USA TODAY for the All-USA College Academic First Team. The selection process, which considered grades, honors, and leadership, most emphasized nominees' abilities to apply their intellectual skills outside the classroom for the benefit of society. For his selection, Lee will receive a trophy, a $2,500 cash award, and recognition in USA TODAY.
"I'm honored to represent my class on this team," said Lee, whose honors and accolades this 2006-07 academic year include the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, the Morris K. Udall Scholarship, and a National Wildlife Federation Campus Ecology Fellowship.
Lee, also a Rhodes Scholar finalist and a student manager at The Rose Institute of State and Local Government this year, was one of several students to earn both local and international media attention for the creation and launch of Fantasy Congress last fall (http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/news/pressreleases/article.asp?article_id=762), a political game that tracks the work of senators and representatives over legislative sessions. Lee, with Ian Hafkenschiel '08, Arjun Lall '07, and Ethan Andyshak '06 received a Web entrepreneurship award from The Kravis Leadership Institute at CMC that helped launch Fantasy Congress last September. The site, www.fantasycongress.com, now has more than 44,000 registered users.
The All-USA College Academic Team is modeled after an all-star sports team. This means that judges work to build a team of students who are universally outstanding and excel in different ways. "My selection demonstrates what CMC provides: good education and outstanding professors that are able to make your dreams come true," said Lee, whose application emphasized his work on Fantasy Congress as an application of his academic studies to the pressing issues of government reform and accountability.
"I hope that this honor helps me to represent part of our generationa generation that is willing to take risks, use new technology, and think outside the box," said Lee. "When is there a better time than now to take risks to do something better for the world? For example, by thinking about Congress in a different way?
"On this team," said Lee, "you'll find people who are driven, who really believe that the unexamined life is not worth living, and that time in this world is measured by service that we give."
