Brian Worley Honored with APPA's Meritorious Service Award

Think of a green initiative on campus, and chances are that Brian Worley's name is attached to it. The CMC director of facilities and campus services hosts regular meetings on environmental concerns, and it's his name that frequently appears on e-mails having to do with the College's energy-saving measures.
In July, Worley heads to Denver, Colo., to accept the Meritorious Service Award from officials at APPA, the Association of Physical Plant Administrators of universities and colleges, during a conference in the Mile High City. The nonprofit organization (tagline: Leadership in Educational Facilities) is based in Alexandria, Va., and its 5,000-plus membership includes more than 2,800 facilities professionals from across the United States, and internationally, from Pacific Rim countries such as Australia and New Zealand.
Worley, an officer for APPA's Pacific Coast region, has been active in the Association of Physical Plant Administrators for 24 years. The Meritorious Service Award is APPA's highest individual service award, given to those members who have made significant, life-long contributions to the profession of higher education facilities management.
"I have benefitted professionally from the outset of my membership in PCAPPA and APPA," Worley says. "The educational programs and networking have enabled me to understand, organize, and provide better facilities and planning services in my respective institutions.
"As anyone who has served in an organization of volunteers knows, he added, "the rewards of involvement are many, and I have especially enjoyed lasting friendships with colleagues from throughout North America and beyond. That all three recipients of this year's awards are from one region (we believe this is a first for APPA) speaks to the strength of PCAPPA. I feel honored to be in such company, and will continue to contribute to the advancement of educational facilities professionals."
To be eligible, nominees must have been an active institutional representative or associate member at an APPA institutional or affiliate organization for a minimum of 10 consecutive years; have actively participated in meetings and other functions at the international level; have served as an association officer at the international level; have served as chair or member of an official APPA training program or project; and/or served an associated professional organization whose principle purpose is related to the betterment of facilities management operations at colleges and universities.
Worley himself has served the Pacific Coast region as Small College Chair, as President, Junior and Senior Representative to APPA, and is currently Secretary/Treasurer of its Pacific Coast region.
No more than three APPA members are awarded the Meritorious Service Award, annually. Tony Ichsan of Santa Rosa Junior College, and Mark Hunter of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, will also be receiving the award, alongside Worley.
