Archbishop Tutu Speaks On Bridging the Chasm

Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu spoke to a capacity crowd of more than 2,000 on March 30 at Bridges Auditorium. His lecture, Bridging the Chasm Between Black and White, was greeted by several lengthy standing ovations and punctuated with messages of hope, humor, and peace. The evening ended with presentation by President Pamela Gann of the Claremont McKenna College Distinguished Public Service Award, the highest such honor bestowed by the College. His visit was sponsored by the CMC Res Publica Society and the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum.
Desmond Tutu, former Archbishop of Capetown and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. He has also received the Order for Meritorious Service from President Nelson Mandela; the Archbishop of Canterbury's Award for Outstanding Service to the Anglican Communion; and the Martin Luther King, Jr., Non-Violent Peace Prize. He is the author of numerous books, including The Rainbow People of God: The Making of a Peaceful Revolution. He currently serves as Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape.
