CMC Faculty Research Committee Major Grant Program

The Faculty Research Committee (FRC) invites applications for its new Major Grant program. All CMC faculty outside of Keck Science are eligible to apply. (CMC research funding for Keck Science faculty is awarded through the Keck Science Faculty Research Grant Program.) Grants of between $10,000 and $20,000 can be requested to support any large research-related expenses, including, but not limited to, funds to purchase equipment, collect data, host a conference or workshop, or support research travel.
Applicants should email a 2-3 page request to deanofthefaculty@cmc.edu by Friday, August 30th, 2024. The document should (1) outline the proposed research project and its value; and (2) provide an itemized budget of between $10,000 and $20,000. Documentation for individual expenses should be appended to the request whenever possible. Please note that Major Grant funding cannot be used to pay stipends to CMC faculty members. If Major Grant funding will be supplemented by funding from another source (IFA, department, Institute, grant, etc.), that should also be indicated.In addition to the quality and feasibility of the research proposal, priority will be given to:
- Tenure-line faculty
- Research that is likely to lead to peer-reviewed publications, grants, or other scholarly or creative achievements
- Research that involves or benefits other members of the CMC community (students, faculty, staff, etc.), or that enhances CMC’s scholarly reputation
- Faculty who do not have access to other sources of significant institutional or external funding
- Research that could not be undertaken without Major Grant funding
Applicants should indicate whether they are in need of funds this fiscal year, next fiscal year, or whether they have flexibility. If you have any questions about how to properly allocate expenses across fiscal years, please reach out to Dean Schroeder before submitting your application. Depending on the applications received, the FRC may choose to make an award for this fiscal year and an award for next fiscal year during this application cycle.
Funds awarded through the Major Grant program will not count towards the $10,000 annual limit per faculty member for Faculty Research Grant funding; however, applicants should not expect to receive additional money through the Faculty Research Grant program to support the activities described in their Major Grant application. No faculty member may receive more than one Major Grant in a 5-year period. Faculty awarded a Major Grant will be expected to submit a report detailing the impact of the grant and accounting for the grant funds, no later than three months after the activities described in the grant application are concluded.
