Minxin Pei, the Tom and Margot Pritzker ’72 Professor of Government and George R. Roberts Fellow, published The Broken China Dream: How Reform Revived Totalitarianism (Princeton University Press, 2025). In the book, Pei examines the factors underlying China’s reversion to a totalitarianism under the one-man rule of Xi Jinping following the reforms of the post-Mao era, which had cultivated expectations that the country would function as a free and democratic society.
