Professor of Government Nicholas Buccola, also the Dr. Jules K. Whitehill Professor of Humanism & Ethics at CMC, published One Man’s Freedom: Goldwater, King, and the Struggle over an American Ideal (Princeton University Press, 2025). The book examines the clash between Arizona Senator and former GOP presidential candidate Barry Goldwater and civil rights trailblazer Martin Luther King Jr. on the meaning of freedom, how their opposing viewpoints still divide American politics, and what lessons can be learned from their lives and mutual antagonism. Buccola spoke about his book at CMC’s Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on October 7, 2025.
