Alumni in Action

To meet the need of Claremont McKenna and 5C students seeking climate-related occupations, the Roberts Environmental Center (REC) hosted the 9th Annual Green Careers Conference, with the goal of showcasing the breadth of professional fields available to them. Students from all 5Cs attended the conference.

The panel presentations on Feb. 3, moderated by REC analysts, featured alumni working in sectors that included energy; government; and environmental, social, governance (ESG) who highlighted opportunities in environmental law, policy, tech, finance, and media. Each of the 17 presenters also met in “coffee chats” with interested students.

Among the alumni who returned to campus to share their advice and network with CMC students:

  • Nick Bagatelos ’86, glazier, Net Zero Envelope
  • Sara Guiltinan ’06, renewable energy specialist, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management
  • Ata Khan’08, planning manager, City of Pomona
  • Johanna Masket ’85, advising co-founder, bgood collective
  • Tom Mourmouras ’10, hydrogen conversion manager, Shell
  • Laurel Peacock ’04, head of ESG at private equity firm NGP
  • Philip Trapp ’09, business development manager, Cal Solar, Inc.

During the keynote session held in front of a full house at the Athenaeum, Camille Doherty ’25 interviewed Stacey Hoppe, vice president for social responsibility and sustainability for Warner Bros. Discovery, who oversees strategy, programs, and initiatives in the area of environmental sustainability, including climate strategy, emissions reduction, and reporting.

Doherty, a PPE-media studies major who worked for Hoppe at Warner Bros. Discovery as a social impact intern, focused the discussion on the value of storytelling to create a sustainable future and the practical aspects of Hoppe’s professional role.
