Augusta Lewis ’23, Frank Applebaum ’24 Win National Championships

Their stories were both triumphant in their own unique ways, but Augusta Lewis ’23 and Frank Applebaum ’24 together made history for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swimming and diving program when they earned national championships on March 16 and March 17 at the Greensboro Aquatics Center in North Carolina.

CMS had never had a national champion in both men’s swimming and diving and women’s swimming and diving in the same season before this year. The programs came close in the early 2000s, with Jason Reed winning the 100-yard butterfly in 2001, Suzy Nicoletti taking first in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2002, Lisa Smith winning the 400-yard individual medley in 2004, and Andrew Cox winning the 50-yard freestyle in 2005.

For the first time in CMS history, an Athena and a Stag were on top of the podium at the same NCAA Championship event.
