Professor Petropoulos To Present UK Lecture

Jonathan Petropoulos, the John V. Croul Professor of European History and director of the Gould Center for Humanistic Studies, will present a public lecture at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne on Tuesday, Feb. 15, on the subject of Nazi Art Plundering and the Search for Looted Works. Petropoulos, associate director of CMC's Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights, is on sabbatical at Cambridge University for the academic year. As the former research director for the Presidential Commission on Holocaust Assets in the United States, he has assisted Holocaust victims and their heirs in the recovery artworks looted by Nazis. Petropoulos is the author of Art as Politics in the Third Reich (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1996) and The Faustian Bargain: The Art World in Nazi Germany (Oxford University Press, 2000). His new book, Royals and the Reich: The House of Hessen in Nazi Germany, will be published later this year by Oxford University Press.
His lecture will examine the history of the Nazi art looting program, including the roles of art experts and plundering commandos; recent developments in recovery of Holocaust-era looted cultural property; and current public and private sector initiatives.
