CMCers Invited to Dinner and a Movie at Hollywood Cemetery

The Los Angeles Chapter of the Claremont McKenna College Alumni Association invites CMC friends and family to a Saturday, Aug. 15 screening of director Peter Bogdanovich's 1973 feature film Paper Moon, at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. The summer movie outing is the first of its kind for the CMCAA, and was suggested by Los Angeles chapter co-chair Chelina Odbert '99.

Odbert says both she and co-chair Stacey Fong '99 wanted to do a series of casual, inexpensive events that celebrate the hidden treasures of Los Angeles. "The subway art tour was the first in our 'Hidden L.A.' series, and was quite fun," Odbert says. "Now that the lovely summer weather has arrived, we thought we'd take advantage and organize an outdoor 'Hidden L.A.' event.

"The outdoor movie series at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery fit the bill perfectly," Odbert says. "I'm predicting another great evening with fellow CMCers."

Film screenings have been hosted at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery by Cinespia since 2002, with thousands of guests flocking to the graveyard on weekend nights to watch both classic and contemporary films projected on a mausoleum wall. Picnic dinners are encouraged, as are blankets, pillows, and low chairs (leave taller chairs and pets at home). Parking is $5 and $10 donation tickets are available at the gate.

Although reservations are not required for the Cinespia film screening, the CMCAA Los Angeles Chapter is asking CMCers to reserve for this activity online: https://online.cmc.edu/NetCommunity/SSLPage.aspx?pid=1067&srcid=227.

Guests are encouraged to arrive when gates open at 7 p.m., as space fills up quickly. Music to chat and dine by is provided by an alternating series of disc jockeys; movie time is 8:30 p.m.

Cinespia calls Bogdanovich's Paper Moon, "undeniably entertaining," a beautifully shot film that mixes comedy and realism. According to Cinespia's Web site, "Ryan O'Neal stars as a fast talking door-to-door salesman in the depression era who takes a wily and cynical orphan under his wing. Together they travel across dust-bowl America, making ends meet bamboozling country bumpkins." Hilarious and unsentimentally sweet, O'Neal plays opposite his real life 9-year-old daughter, Tatum, in her big-screen debut.

For her role in the film, Tatum O'Neal became the youngest actor to ever receive an Oscar.

Paper Moon was filmed in black and white by Laszlo Kovacs, with subtle direction from Peter Bogdanovich, perhaps best known for The Last Picture Show (1971).

The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is located at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, at Gower, in Los Angeles.
