Alexis Orton '03 Named Junior Fellow
for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Alexis Orton '03 has been named a junior fellow for 2003-2004 by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC. The junior fellows program is highly selective, offering only 10 fellowships to graduating seniors from more than 200 colleges and universities. "It is an extraordinary honor to work with the Carnegie Endowment," Orton said. "Especially in light of September 11th, and increasing weapons of mass destruction proliferation among states and terrorists, I hope that I will contribute to efforts that may reduce this risk in the future."
The Carnegie Endowment is a nonprofit organization devoted to cooperation between nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States, helping shape foreign policy through research, publications, convening, and instituting new programs. During her internship, Orton will work alongside a senior fellow on non-proliferation issues.
Orton is an international relations major whose passion for the subject began in the fourth grade, when she wrote to servicemen aboard the USS John F. Kennedy during the Gulf War. Following the September 11 tragedy, she worked as an intern with the Department of State Task Force on Terrorism and also the department's Foreign Consequence Team. She plans to pursue graduate studies following her internships.
"Alexis is an exceptional person. Her academic achievements at CMC have been superb, she is serious and mature, and a good friend to her classmates," said Professor P. Edward Haley, the W.M. Keck Foundation Chair of International Strategic Studies. "One day, I expect her to hold an exceptionally important policy making position on the national security side."
