The John Herald Bluegrass Band In Free Concert Nov. 4

Leading Bluegrass musician John Herald and his band will visit Claremont McKenna College at 6:45 on Monday, Nov. 4 for a free public concert at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaum. In a career spanning more than four decades, he has delighted audiences from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Ole Opry. He will join band members, Brantley Kearns, vocals and fiddle; Fred Sokolow and Tom Sauber, fiddle, mandolin and banjo; and Pat Campbell, acoustic bass.
Herald has been an innovative proponent of traditional folk music and could be found jamming with Bob Dylan, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, and Rory Block in the '60s. He has recorded as both a singer and guitarist with Bonnie Raitt and Bette Midler and written for Joan Baez, Linda Rondstadt, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. His most recent album, Roll on John was released in 2000.
Lauded by The New York Times, as "a top-notch showman," Herald began playing guitar in Greenwich Village and gaining fame as singer and guitarist for the Greenbriar Boys, the first touring bluegrass band in the northeast, with recordings, including "Alligator Man," now considered bluegrass classics. He later helped found the Woodstock Mountain Review, with whom he still occasionally plays, and his music was featured in the Jon Voigt film "The Champ." In addition to playing with bluegrass bands, Herald has worked as a session musician and songwriter, as well as completing solo projects.
