The Hon. Antonin Scalia, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, will visit Claremont McKenna College on Wednesday, Jan. 31 to discuss "A Matter of Constitutional Interpretation."
Justice Scalia's remarks will begin at 6:45 p.m. in the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. Seating is limited to CMC students, faculty, and staff. Additional public seating is available for remote viewing at McKenna Auditorium on a first-come basis, with doors opening at 6 p.m.
Justice Scalia began his legal career with a nationally prominent law firm in Cleveland, where he practiced corporate finance, labor, and antitrust law. In 1967, he joined the faculty of the University of Virginia School of Law. During the 1970s, Presidents Nixon and Ford appointed him to a number of administrative posts, including that of assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel. He subsequently joined the faculty of the University of Chicago School of Law.
In 1982, President Reagan appointed Scalia to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, where he honed his reputation for meticulous jurisprudence. In June 1986, Reagan nominated him as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, filling the vacancy created by William Rehnquist's elevation to Chief Justice. On Sept. 26, 1986, he took the oath of office.
Born in Trenton, N.J., Justice Scalia graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University where he was class valedictorian, and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he served as notes editor for the Harvard Law Review. In 1960, he was the Sheldon Fellow at Harvard University.
During his Southern California visit, Justice Scalia will also address members of the Claremont McKenna College Res Publica Society at a luncheon in Orange County on Thursday, Feb. 1.
