Professor Jonathan Petropoulos to Present Royals and the Reich Lecture Following Installation Ceremony

Professor Jonathan Petropoulos will present a free public lecture, Royals and the Reich: The Princes of Hesse in Nazi Germany, at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. The lecture follows his installation as the first holder of the John V. Croul Professorship of European History.
Petropoulos, a distinguished scholar of modern German and European history, was appointed to serve as art and cultural property director of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Holocaust Assets in the United States, whose report, Plunder and Restitution: The U.S. and Holocaust Victims' Assets, was submitted to President Clinton in January 2001. His third book, Royals and the Reich: The House of Hesse in Nazi Germany, will be published in 2004 by Oxford University Press.
Petropoulos also serves as director of CMC's Family of Benjamin Z. Gould Center for Humanistic Studies, whose mission focuses on the interpretation of modern issues based on the values of literature, philosophy, and religion. He received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of California, Los Angeles, and master's degree and doctorate in modern European history from Harvard University.
The lecture is free and open to the public, with seating available on a first-come basis.
