Is leadership learned, or gained through experience? That is the question that Professor Morgan McCall will explore during his presentation, "The Path to Leadership Mastery," at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
A professor of management and organization at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California, McCall is an expert in identification, assessment, and development of executive leadership. Prior to joining USC, he was the director of research and a senior behavioral scientist at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C. McCall also worked as director of human resource strategy and planning at Sun Microsystems.
In 1997 McCall received the Marion Gislason Award for "Leadership in Executive Development" from The Executive Development Roundtable at Boston University, and in 2008, the "Distinguished Professional Contributions Award" from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In 2009 McCall had the opportunity to serve as an expert judge in the Fortune/Hewitt Associates/RBL Group ranking of the "Top Companies for Leaders" in North America. He has worked on leadership development issues with a variety of companies, including American Express, Boeing, Cisco Systems, Dow Chemical, Eaton, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Motorola, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, Starbucks, and Toyota Motor Sales.
McCall earned a B.S. with honors from Yale University and a Ph.D. from Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. McCall's award-winning books include: Developing Global Executives: The Lessons of International Experience (co-authored with George Hollenbeck); Advances in Global Leadership, Volume II (co-edited with William Mobley); High Flyers: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders; and The Lessons of Experience to name a few.
