The Mariachi Divas will perform at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Tuesday, March 28 for "A Musical Celebration in Honor of Cesar Chavez." The public portion of the program begins at 6:45 p.m.; seating is free, on a first-come basis.
The performance will mark the third Athenaeum visit for the Divas, who visited campus in March 2004 and 2005. Their music will honor the birthday of activist and labor leader Cesar Chavez, founder of the National Farms Workers Association, and pays tribute to Hispanic heritage.
Founded in 1999, the Mariachi Divas are a multicultural ensemble, represented by women of Mexican, Cuban, Samoan, Argentinean, Columbian, Japanese, Puerto Rican, Swiss, and Anglo descent. Their lively sounds incorporates jazz, Columbia, salsa, and meringue into traditional mariachi music, as well as their own unique style of music called "ranchengue," which is a unique combination of a ranchera played in merengue fashion.
The Divas have been featured at venues throughout the United States and Mexico, including appearances throughout Los Angeles. In addition to televised performances, they also appeared in the documentary, Viva El Mariachi (2005), and two independent films Dead Man's Shoe and La Dentista.
Their latest CD, Asi Somos, is available at Tower Record stores throughout Southern California.
