Los Angeles Times columnist Tim Rutten will visit the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Monday, Feb. 27 as part of a continuing examination of Bias and Objectivity in the News Media. The public portion of Rutten's discussion, "Have the News Media Lost the Public's Trust?" begins at 6:45 p.m. with seating on a first-come basis. The event is free and open to the public.
Preceding his Ath appearance, Rutten also will meet with students during a Careers in Journalism information session at 4:30 p.m. Joining Rutten will be Nick Owchar '90, an assistant book editor for the Los Angeles Times. Rutten, whose column appears in Calendar, started his career with The Times more than 30 years ago as a copy editor, moving through the ranks in subsequent posts as city/county bureau chiefoverseeing a staff responsible for local government and politics, as well as LAPD, the Sheriff's Department and public agencies including the Metropolitan Transportation Authority metro reporter, editorial writer, assistant national editor, opinion editor, and assistant senior editor for the editorial page. He was part of the newspaper's Pulitzer Prize-winning team coverage of the 1994 Northridge earthquake and in 1991 received an award for editorial writing from the Greater Los Angeles Press Club.
Rutten majored in political science while attending California State University, Los Angeles, and is a native of San Bernardino.
