Jameelah Xochitl Medina '99 on The Afro-Latin Diaspora

Jameelah Xochitl Medina '99 will discuss The Afro-Latin Diaspora: From Opacity to Transparency on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum. The public portion of the program begins at 6:45 p.m. Seating is free and on a first-come basis.
Medina is owner of the Medina Academy of Overachievers, a private tutoring program in select subjects for all ages, and also serves as a training coordinator for the State Insurance Fund of California. Her book, The Afro-Latin Diaspora: Awakening Ancestral Memory, Avoiding Cultural Amnesia (2004), discusses the concept of African Resistance in the Americas, with a focus on the heroism and contributions of the people of Latin America.
Medina, who grew up in the communities of La Puente and Bloomington, Calif., majored in Spanish and graduated cum laude, also as a member of the National Spanish Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi. She first began her research into the Afro-Latin Diaspora in 1997 when she traveled to the Caribbean Coast of Panama with a CMC International Research Grant. She studied abroad at the University of Barcelona and earned a master's degree from Claremont Graduate University. Last year, she was awarded the State Fund's Achievement Award for Extraordinary Work and Achievement.
Medina's visit is co-sponsored by the Athenaeum and the Claremont University Consortium Chicano/Latino Student Affairs Center, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. A book signing at 8 p.m. will follow the evening's presentation.
