Events to Commemorate
Founding Trustee's 100th

Claremont McKenna College will celebrate the 100th birthday anniversary of founding trustee Donald McKenna on Wednesday, Oct. 10 with two campus events.
The first, a noon luncheon at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, will revive the spirit of the WordsWorth Society, started by McKennaa linguistics scholar, and onetime aspiring professor of literatureas a way to get to know CMC students and share with them his passion for words. This year's WordsWorth luncheon will be led by Ward Elliott, the Burnet C. Wohlford Professor of American Political Institutions and a charter member of the WordsWorth Society.
Those interested in attending the luncheon have just one requirement: to bring with them a word to share with the rest of the group, including a brief summary of derivation, meaning, and usage.
Then at 10:30 p.m. in Collins Dining Hall, more than 450 students are expected to gather for Plaid Snack Nightanother favored, annual tradition celebrating McKenna's memory with snacks, cake, ice cream, and a raffle for a free trip to Scotland, McKenna's ancestral homeland. Students are encouraged to wear plaid or dress in their tartan finest.
As the new College's first donor and charter trustee, Donald McKenna initiated support for a third college within the Consortium, playing a significant role in the establishment of Claremont Men's College in 1946donating both his own money as well as fundraising for its fruition. He remained a generous contributor to CMC for the rest of his life, and funded the McKenna International Summer Internship Program, offering financial assistance to students pursuing internships abroad during the summers of their sophomore and junior years.
