Election Night at Athenaeum Features
Real-Time Commentary from Professors

In keeping with a campus tradition, the Athenaeum will host a dinner and discussion on Tuesday, Nov. 4 featuring real-time commentary from professors Andrew Busch and Ken Miller in response to the televised voter returns on Election Night. The professors also will be available to answer questions during and after the dinner.
Ever since Ronald Reagan won Massachusetts and 48 other states in 1984, the Athenaeum has had a tradition of hosting an election night celebration for people of all political stripes. Ath Fellows Luke Johnson '09 and Aaron Champagne '10 point to several reasons CMCers won't want to miss this year's opportunity:

Plus, a menu featuring Sarah Palin's favorite chocolate "moose" dessert, Barack Obama's favorite Hawaiian/Chicago dishes (Chicago deep-dish pizza; chicken teriyaki and tempura vegetables), and McCain's favorite north-of-the-border cuisine: beef chimichangas and Southwest green chili rice
Dinner reservations are limited to CMC students, faculty and staff only and may be made online; Athenaeum guests will be able to watch results beginning at 4 p.m., and during the reception, dinner, and beyond. The public portion of the program begins at 6:45 p.m., with free seating on a first-come basis. Campaign attire is encouraged.
Busch, a professor of government and associate dean of the faculty at Claremont McKenna College, has authored or co-authored 10 books on American government and politics, including his most recent, The Constitution on the Campaign Trail: The Surprising Political Career of America's Founding Document (2007), as well as Reagan's Victory: The 1980 Elections and the Rise of the Right (2005), and Red Over Blue: The 2004 Elections and American Politics (with James W. Ceaser, 2005). He currently is at work with James W. Ceaser and John J. Pitney on a book about the 2008 elections.
Busch received his B.A. from the University of Colorado and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
Ken Miller, assistant professor of government, received his B.A. from Pomona College and his JD from Harvard Law School. He practiced law at Morrison & Forester, LLP before receiving his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Miller most recently co-authored The New Political Geography of California (2008), and is completing a new book, Direct Democracy and the Courts (2009). His other publications include Constraining Populism: The Real Agenda of Initiative Reform and The Davis Recall and the Courts.
Miller recently served as a regular commentator on the presidential election for BBC World Service Radio. He has also provided political commentary for NPR, CBC, Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle.
