Economics Professor Mary EvansInstalled as Mitchell Chair inEnvironmental Economics

Robert Day School of Economics and Finance faculty Mary Evans was recently installed as the Jerrine and Thomas Mitchell '66 Associate Professor of Environmental Economics and George R. Roberts Fellow. At an event held last night at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, Evans gave a talk on “The Role of Economics in Managing Environmental Health Risks.” Her talk covered economics research focused on the estimation of benefits associated with policies that improve health, particularly environmental policies related to air quality.
Evans earned her Masters and Ph.D. degrees in economics from the University of Colorado, Boulder, then completed a two-year post-doctoral research fellowship at North Carolina State University. Prior to joining CMC's faculty, Evans taught economics in the College of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee.
Evans' research has been published in the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Public Economics, and the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, and she is the recipient of two Science to Achieve Results Grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. She is also a member of the American Economic Association and the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, and she serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and a member of the editorial council for the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management. President Gann also recognized Jerrine and Tom Mitchell '66 for their longtime support of the College. In addition to Evans' chaired professorship, the Mitchells have established the Thomas M. Mitchell '66 Alumni Fund Scholarship. Tom has served on the Board of Trustees for the past 12 years, and is currently co-chair of the Board's College Advancement Committee. Their daughter Catherine Wieman is a member of the board of directors for the Robert's Environmental Center, and the family has an interest in environmental issues.
