The Easton Archery Range at Claremont McKenna College will be formally dedicated during public ceremonies at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. The event will include a ceremonial shooting of the first arrows and an archery exhibition.
The range, located at the corner of Claremont Boulevard and Arrow Route, is made possible by a gift from the late Mary S. Easton, who will be represented by her son, former CMC trustee James Easton, his wife, Phyllis, and other family members. The Easton family's roots in archery run deep; in 1939, Doug Easton produced the first aluminum arrow. Today, Jas. D. Easton, Inc. is a privately owned manufacturer, marketer and distributor of sporting equipment, headquartered in Van Nuys, Calif. The Easton Archery Range, measuring 30 meters by 100 meters, meets requirements for official archery competition.
Dedication ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. and will include:
* Remarks by James Easton.
* Remarks by CMC President Pamela Gann and Mike Sutton, director of athletics.
* Presentation by CMC freshman Vikram Rangraj, CMC's new archer and recipient of the first Easton Scholarship.
* Ribbon-cutting and ceremonial shooting of the first arrows, followed by an archery exhibition with commentary by Lloyd Brown, former U.S. Archery Olympic coach.
