Conference to Focus on Latin American People and Possibilities

The Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies will host its annual conference, this year themed Latin America: People and Possibilities, at CMC's Bauer Center on Friday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3.

Chair of the Department of Military Science and Leadership at CMC Robert Kirkland, who serves as vice president of PCCLAS, says the conference is hosted annually across different campuses on the Pacific Coast of the United States or Mexico.

Roderic Camp, CMC's Philip M. McKenna Professor of the Pacific Rim, will deliver the conference keynote address. Camp has served as a visiting professor at Colegio de Mexico and the Foreign Service Institute, and has carried out research as a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, established as part of the Smithsonian Institution. He has been a Fulbright Fellowship recipient on three occasions, as well as a recipient of the Howard Heinz Foundation fellowship for research on Mexico.

Other scheduled conference speakers include:

Jaime O. Rodriguez, professor of political science; expert in Mexican politics; University of California, Irvine.

Miguel Tinker-Sales, professor of political science; expert on Venezuela; Pomona College.

William Beezley, professor of history; expert in Mexican history; University of Arizona.

Edward Telles, professor of sociology; expert in race and ethnicity; University of California, Los Angeles

Kirkland says scholars submit papers that are reviewed by an organizing committee that determines which will be presented.

"We present a variety of papers, as the conference is multi-disciplinary," he says. "Papers also will be given by graduate students and undergraduates."

In addition, the PCCLAS bestows an annual book prize and scholarly article prize (the Hubert Herring Award) named for the long-time professor of history at Pomona College and the Claremont Graduate University.
