Ath Hosts Former Ambassador Han Sung-joo, April 5

Han Sung-joo, former South Korean Ambassador to the United States and CMC's Freeman Foundation Visiting Professor in Asian Affairs, will discuss "Revisiting the Korea-U.S. Alliance" at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Wednesday, April 5. The public portion of the program begins at 6:45 p.m.; seating is free, on a first-come basis.

Sung-joo's address will highlight the complexities regarding the current state and future of the alliance between the Republic of Korea and the United States, including interrelations between South Korea and North Korea, as well as U.S. lines with both countries.

Sung-joo, professor emeritus of international relations at Korea University and president of Seoul Forum for International Affairs, served as ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the United States from 20032005. He also was the U.N. secretary-general's special representative for Cyprus (199697), a member of the U.N. Inquiry Commission on the 1994 Rwanda Genocide (1999), and chairman of the East Asia Vision Group (20002001).

He is a graduate of Seoul National University and has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley. He previously has taught at City University of New York, and was a visiting professor at both Columbia and Stanford universities.

Sung-joo's publications in English include Korean Diplomacy in an Era of Globalization, Korea in a Changing World, and Changing Values in Asia (1999).
