FAQ's on Institutional Statements
FAQ's on Institutional Statements
Does CMC issue institutional statements?
No. In February 2023, the Board of Trustees adopted the principles set forth in the University of Chicago’s Kalven Report, which affirms CMC’s commitment to the academic freedom of faculty and students in the face of suppression from internal and/or external entities while also insisting on institutional neutrality on political and social issues (the “Kalven Principles”). In accordance with the Kalven Principles, the College does not issue institutional statements.
Do the Kalven Principles also apply to statements regarding “moral issues”?
Yes. Terrorist acts, genocides, murders, ethnic cleansings, mass shootings, wars, civil and human rights violations, and other tragedies are often rife with moral issues that provoke universal condemnation. However, the selective choice as to when to issue statements and when not to issue such statements violates the neutrality required by the Kalven Principles.
