Ain't I A Woman?
Laverne Cox is an Emmy-nominated actress, documentary film producer, and prominent advocate for transgender awareness and equality.
Lauded for her portrayal as Sophia Burset on Netflix’s "Orange is the New Black," Cox is the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on mainstream television. She is currently producing a documentary titled "Free CeCe” which focuses on CeCe McDonald, a transgender woman incarcerated in a men's prison and the larger implications of CeCe's case for the transgender community.
Cox's work as an advocate has earned her many national awards, including Glamour magazine’s 2014 Women of the Year, the Dorian Rising Star Award, the Courage Award from the Anti-Violence Project, the Community Leader Award from the LGBT Center of New York City, the Reader's Choice Award from "Out” Magazine, among others. Cox has also been named one of the Grio's 100 Most Influential African Americans as well as one of the Top 50 Trans Icons by the Huffington Post.
Ms. Cox’s Athenaeum appearance is co-sponsored by the Presidents’ Leadership Fund, the Personal and Social Responsibility Committee, and the Office of the Dean of Students.

Athenaeum doors will open for those with confirmed reservations at 5:30 p.m.
Ms. Cox’s talk will begin at 6 p.m.
Seats for this event will be extremely limited and restricted to CMC students, faculty, and staff. Faculty and staff are limited to bringing one additional immediate family member.
Online reservations and seating on the day of the event is on a first come-first serve basis only.
Seats cannot be held for others.
Overflow seating will be available at Pickford Auditorium and, depending on demand, might also be subject to reservations.
