Tennis Cups Timed for
Dedication of new Center

Alumni and current members of the CMS Stags and Athenas tennis teams will compete in mixed matches, and against each other, during two tennis events on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the new Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
The Ducey Cup Match for men, and the Gerry Lahanas Alumni Classic for women, coincide with a private luncheon dedication of the new tennis center, a complex featuring 12 lighted courts, a team room, locker rooms, restrooms, offices, and a new intramural playing field. The Center, at Sixth Street and Brooks Avenue, is named for lead donor and Life Trustee Gary Biszantz '56 P'08.
Other contributors to the Center include The Berber Family Foundation, Fritz B. Burns Foundation, Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, Rusty Grosse '57, David R. Moffett '64 P'93 P'94, Mary Dell Pritzlaff P'76 and John C. Pritzlaff III '76, and R. Ernest Smith '56.
The men's Ducey Cup matches will be played from 9 to 11 a.m., followed in the afternoon by the women's Lahanas Cup competitions from 2 to 4 p.m. In addition to being played in a brand new facility this year, the tennis cups also honor the 50th anniversary of CMS athletics, according to head tennis coaches Paul Settles and Maxanne Retzlaff.
Settles says more than 25 Stags tennis alumni are expected to compete on Saturdayan annual tradition since 1975.
By comparison, the younger Gerry Lahanas Alumni Classic debuted in fall 2006, when founding Athenas tennis coach Gerry Lahanas was inducted into the CMS Hall of Fame. "The team was originally Scripps, and then Claremont and Mudd joined to become Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in 1976-1977," Retzlaff says. "It was great to meet Gerry and some of her players when she was here for the ceremony."
Retzlaff hopes the Lahanas Classic will grow to rival the men's alumni competitions, particularly if timed with key campus events, such as the Biszantz Family Tennis Center dedication on Saturday.
"We thought this was a perfect opportunity to invite our tennis alumnae back to play and visit with current Athenas," she said.
