CMC alumna Sara Birkenthal ’13 and Jared Genser, an associate of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University, co-authored the op-ed “At Home With Our Iranian Nuclear Partners” in the June 23, 2015, issue of the Wall Street Journal.
Birkenthal and Genser caution the downplaying of criticism of Iran on human rights in hopes of securing a nuclear deal.
“Regardless of the outcome of the nuclear negotiations, the U.S. should reaffirm its commitment to advancing human rights in Iran. That means making the removal of sanctions contingent on tangible improvements in Iran’s human-rights situation. This would include releasing political prisoners and halting executions for political crimes or for which there was no due process of law.”
Since graduating from CMC, Birkenthal has been working at Perseus Strategies, an international law and consulting firm that focuses on human rights, humanitarian, and corporate social responsibility projects.
She is also a fellow of the National Endowment for Democracy’s Penn Kemble Youth Forum on Democracy and will be spending next year on a Fulbright Scholarship in Bahrain studying Arabic and doing research on women's participation in the economy.
